OFF

OFF is an RPG developed with RPG Maker 2003 that, although released in 2008 for Windows, didn't arrive on Mac until well into 2016. This version for macOS operating systems is also available in English. The original game came out in French, and it wasn't until three years later that it received an English translation.

A very special RPG

OFF isn't an entirely conventional RPG. It is usually compared to titles like Undertale or Earthbound (Mother), and no wonder, since it shares very characteristic elements with both. For example, the game features a large number of puzzles and some special areas that completely change the game's overall look. Additionally, one of its most notable features is the way it constantly breaks the fourth wall, clearly differentiating between the Player and the Batter (the character you control).

Truly dynamic turn-based combat

Although turn-based, the combat in OFF has a dynamic cooldown system similar to that in the original Final Fantasy VII. As a result, the game encourages you to act fast. If you spend too much time deciding which skill or which attack you want to perform, the enemies will most likely be able to attack you again. While it's not a particularly difficult game, some enemies can give you trouble.

Several endings and a few secrets

Without giving away any spoilers, since a large part of the game's appeal is its surprise factor, OFF has three different endings. Two of these endings will depend on a specific decision that you're free to make in your role as Player. The third ending, on the other hand, known as the "space ape" ending, is a sort of joke related to the secret ending of the first Silent Hill (the one with the dog). Another well-known secret is the optional fight against Sugar, the most difficult boss in the whole adventure.
